What is the difference between mieru and mirareru

Japanese words Mieru (見える) and mirareru (見られる) use the same Character 見, they look the similar but have different meanings

First, let’s see Mieru (見える), it refers to “to be visible, to appear, to see”, Mieru (見える) is used when an object enters one’s field of vision naturally, or when one can see an object without making any special effort

Example
1) このホテルは、どの部屋からも富士山が見える。
Romaji:Kono hoteruwa, dono heyakaramo fujisanga mieru.
English: At this hotel, Mount Fuji is visible from any rooms.

2) あそこに見えるのが、国会議事堂です。
Romaji:Asokoni mierunoga, Kokkaigijidoodesu.
English: What you can see over that way is the Kokkaigijidoo Building.

3) どこか海の見えるところへ行きたい。
Romaji:Dokoka umino mieru tokoroe ikitai.
English: Want to go someplace’ where we can see the sea.

Mieru (見える) also expresses an inference or conjecture based on something one has seen or heard

Example
1) あの人は体格が立派で丈夫そうに見えるが、案外体が弱いんです。
Romaji:Ano hitowa taikakuga rippade joobusooni mieruga, angai karadaga yowaindesu.
English: He has a fantastic build and looks so robust, yet he is surprisingly frail.

2) この服を着るとやせて見える。
Romaji:Kono hukuo kiruto yasete mieru.
English: When I wear this outfit, I look thin.

3) どうやら雨もあがったとみえて、外が明るくなった。
Romaji:Dooyara amemo agattato miete, sotoga akarukunatta.
English: It seems the rain has stopped, it’s gotten lighter outside.

Mirareru (見られる) refers to “to be able to see”

Example
1) こんどの皆既日食は、ハワイへ行けば見られる。
Romaji:Kondono kaikinisshokuwa, Hawaie ikeba mirareru.
English: You will be able to see the next total solar eclipse if you go to Hawaii.

2) こんなに素晴らしいショーは、めったに見られません。
Romaji:Konnani subarashii shoowa, mettani miraremasen.
English: You can hardly ever see such a magnificent show as this.

Mirareru (見られる) may indicate that a phenomenon, situation, or circumstance occurs often

Example
1) 大地震の時には、地面の隆起や陥没などの現象が見られる。
Romaji:Oojishinno tokiniwa, jimenno ryuukiya kanbotsunadono genshooga mirareru.
English: During a big earthquake will see such phenomena as upheavals and collapsing of the ground.

2) 砂漠では、よく蜃気楼が見られるそうです。
Romaji:Sabakudewa, yoku shinkirooga mirareru soodesu.
English: They say you can often see mirages in the desert.

Mirareru (見られる), in the form ~ to mirareteiru (と見られている) expresses that something can be considered or judged to be a certain way, although it is not yet completely understood

Example
1) 事故の原因は運転手の居眠り運転と見られている。
Romaji: Jikono geninwa untenshuno inemuri untento mirareteiru.
English: The cause of the accident appears to be the driver’s having fallen asleep at the wheel.

2) 株価は今後も下がり続けるだろうと見られている。
Romaji: Kabukawa kongomo sagaritsuzukeru darooto mirareteimasu.
English: They are saying that stock market prices are going to continue to decline from now on.
