Hi everyone, I am a private Japanese tutor NATSU. I am from Japan’s southernmost prefecture, OKINAWA. I studied Hotel Management at a university in Hong Kong and it’s been almost 7 years since I moved to Hong Kong.

I began learning English in earnest after high school and took Mandarin and Cantonese classes in university, so I know the joys as well as the difficulties of learning a new language. I have experience teaching kids and my Hong Kong friends Japanese.

Private Japanese lessons are offered in both Japanese and English, tailored to each student’s level and goals. Each lesson includes free talk time, allowing students to acquire basic conversational skills in Japanese. If you would like to use your own textbook, feel free to let me know!

はじめまして、沖縄出身のNatsuと申します。香港の大学を卒業し、その後香港の外資系企業で数年勤め、今では香港在住は約7年になりました。旅行やホスピタリティが大好きで、大学ではホテルマネジメントを学んでいました。現在は香港人の主人と香港島に住んでいます。

高校卒業後から本格的に英語を学びはじめたり、大学では中国語（普通語）や広東語を学んだりと、新しい言語を学ぶことの楽しさや難しさを知っています。
効率的に言語習得をするには、インプットも大事ですが、たくさんアウトプットすることも大切です。私の日本語レッスンでは、一人一人のレベルや希望にそって、できる限り多く会話をしながらスピーキングを重視して進めていきたいと思います。
レッスンは出来る限り日本語で教えていきますが、どうしても必要な際には英語を使います。

大学では、日本語を学んでいた香港人の友達に日本語を教えたり、９歳の子供にもプライベートレッスンをしたことがあります。どんな年層の方でも楽しく、分かりやすく教えられるように努めますので、みなさんの日本語学習のお手伝いができること楽しみにしています！

大人（初級レベル〜中級レベル）：ビデオ、教科書、図表・絵を使う。新しいボキャブラリーを教えて、毎回テストする
大人（上級レベル〜ビジネス）：トピックを決めて、関連のボキャブラリーを教えて、そのボキャブラリーを使って文章を作ったり、ロールプレー等でたくさん話す機会を作る

Natsu先生へ「だけ」と「しか」の違いについて教えていただけないでしょうか?

Natsu先生’s Answer:

どちらも限定の意味を持つが、限定のレベルが違う。
〜しか：常に否定文のみに使われる（例：〇〇しか〜ない）→〇〇以外全て否定する意味になる
〜だけ：肯定文にも否定文どちらでも使える。（例：〇〇だけ〜する）→他にも選択肢はあるが、〇〇に絞って〜するという意味を持つ

Natsu先生へ「が」と「けど」の違いについて説明してくれませんか?

Natsu先生’s Answer:

「が」は少し固い言葉で書き言葉として使われることが多い。「けど」はもう少し砕けた感じで、話し言葉で使われることが多い。

Natsu先生へ「～でしょう」と「～ですよね」の違いについて説明してくれませんか?

Natsu先生’s Answer:
「〜でしょう」は話し手が、はっきりした根拠はないが、物事を推量してる時に使われる（例：明日は晴れるでしょう→確定ではないが推量している）

「〜ですよね」は分かっているが自分の意見に自信がない際に、相手にも同意を求めるときに使われる

12 Things that Shock Foreigners in Japan

■ There are lots of Japanese people wearing masks
Back to the normal life, foreigners may see many Japanese people wearing masks, when they first come to Japan, one of the biggest shock is seeing many mask wearing Japanese people in the street. However in the overseas only the people who work for medical industry or cleaning industry are wearing masks when they are workings.

■ Japanese people apologize immediately
foreign people feel that Japanese people apologize quickly. To be honest, there is a big difference between Japanese and Westerners in the sense of apology. In the Western countries, there is a sense of “apology = acknowledging one’s own fault and taking responsibility”, which caused the people do not simply say “I’m sorry.”

■ Japan’s trains always on time
Although the Japanese people may not usually care about it, because all the Japanese are used to it, however the foreigners reaction makes all the Japanese feel surprised. In Poland, delay of 10 minutes is a common occurrence, and suspensions and delays often occur in Germany and the United Kingdom.

■ There are many vending machines in Japan
There are many types of vending machines in Japan, including vending machines for drinks, cigarettes, food, and liquid crystal. Also, the penetration rate of vending machines seems to be the highest for the land area.

■ Japan has a wonderful hospitality culture
There are many people who are happy because the services of Japanese restaurants, hotels, banks, etc. are good. When taking an order, the customer seems to feel comfortable with the Service clerk’s polite response such as squatting.

■ Japan has no culture of chips
In Japan, there is no such thing as tipping cultures. There is also a story that a foreigner who went to a Japanese restaurant thought that he had forgotten the 100 yen that he had placed on the table, and there was a clerk who returned 100 yen to the foreigner.

■ Clean and almost no trash
When Chinese tourists come to Japan, they saw cleaning streets and got surprised. Also, one of the Japanese people’s habit is to bring back trash we had outdoor which is becomes one of the biggest shocks for the foreigners, and it may be related to the Japanese people’s character who feels “embarrassed to bother people.”

■ Japan is a safe country
Japan is famous for its security. It is one of the top 10 countries in the world with the lowest crime rate, and there are many friendly people who even return the dropped wallet to the police.

■ There are few Japanese who can speak English
Japanese are not good at English. The reason may be that the personality of the majority Japanese people who feel embarrassed if they could not speak English fluently.

■ Culture that stamps a seal instead of a signature
In the overseas, signatures are more common used for the formal documents, but in Japan there is a culture of using seals. It seems that China and Taiwan used to have a seal registration system in the past, but nowadays it is only in Japan that the seal registration system continues in the world.

■ The toilet is clean and has a washlet
Many foreigners feel that Japanese toilets are clean. There are more toilets with washlets at hotels and restaurants, and this seems foreigners feel shocked.

■ Japanese kids students clean take the responsibility of cleaning
In Japan, all the Japanese believe it individuals clean on their own. It seems that the Japanese people get surprised because in the overseas the cleaning staff do the cleaning stuff. In Japan, at the primary school we keep the school time for cleaning the classroom, and it is firmly established as a country with good manners.

海外の人がびっくりする日本の生活や習慣、文化について

■日本はマスクをしている人が多い
日本では、日常的にマスクをしている人が多いので、日本旅行に来た外国人が「びっくりした！」という海外の反応があります。
海外でのマスクは、医療用や清掃用で使用します。

■日本人はすぐに謝る性格
日本人はすぐに謝る性格だと海外の人に感じられています。そもそも、謝罪に対する感覚が日本人と欧米人では大きく違いがあります。
欧米では、「謝罪＝自分の非を認める、責任を取る」というような感覚であり、簡単に「ごめんなさい」と言いません。

■日本の電車は時間が正確でびっくり
普段自分達は気にしないかもしれませんが、海外の反応だと日本の電車が時間通り到着することにびっくりするそうです。
ポーランドでは、10分少々の遅れは日常茶飯事で、ドイツやイギリスなどでも運休や遅延は頻繁に起こります。

■日本には自動販売機の数が多い
日本には、飲み物の自動販売機だけでなく、タバコや食べ物、液晶付きの自動販売機など、たくさんの種類の自動販売機があります。また、国土面積に対して自動販売機の普及率は一番だそうです。

■日本はおもてなしの文化が素晴らしい
日本のレストランやホテル、銀行などのサービスが良く、喜んでいる方がたくさんいます。注文取る際に、わざわざしゃがんだりなど、丁寧な対応に心地よく感じているそうです。

■日本にはチップを渡す文化がない
日本では、チップを渡す文化はありません。日本のレストランに行った外国人がテーブルに置いた100円を忘れていると思ってわざわざ届けてくれた店員さんがいるという話もあります。

■清潔でゴミがほとんど落ちていない
中国人観光客が日本へ来た時に、どこを見ても綺麗で驚いているそうです。また、日本人がゴミを持ち帰る習慣なども海外からびっくりされる反応の１つであり、「人に迷惑をかけることを恥ずかしい」と感じる日本人の性格が関係しているのかもしれません。

■日本は治安が良い国
日本は治安が良い国で有名です。世界でも犯罪率が低い国でトップ１０に入る国であり、財布を落としても警察にわざわざ届けてくれる優しい人もたくさんいます。

■英語を話せる日本人が少ない
日本人は英語を話すのが苦手です。理由としては、ペラペラしゃべれないから恥ずかしいと感じてしまう日本人の性格も関係しているのかもしれません。

■サインではなく印鑑を押す文化
海外ではサインで書類を済ますことが多いですが、日本では印鑑を使う文化があります。中国や台湾なども昔は印鑑登録制度もあったそうですが、世界で印鑑制度が続くのは日本だけだそうです。

■トイレが清潔でウォシュレット付きがある
日本のトイレは清潔だと感じている外国人の方も多いそうです。ホテルや飲食店には、ウォシュレット付きのトイレも増えており、そこにもびっくりしているそうです。

■日本の学校では、生徒が掃除をする
日本では、昔から掃除は自分でするという習慣があります。海外では清掃員が掃除してくれるのでびっくりするそうです。
日本では、教室を掃除する時間というのが確保されていて、しっかりマナーのある国として定着しています。
