The difference between ie (いえ) and uchi (うち)

Japanese word ie (いえ) in English means “house” or “family”

ie (いえ) refers to “house” A building built for the purpose of providing shelter for people

Example
1) この家はもう古いので、あちこちいたんでいる。
Romaji:Kono iewa mou hurui node, achikochi itandeiru.
English: This house is quite old, so there are many places in need of repair. (refers to building)

2) 彼は20代の若さで自分の家を建てた。
Romaji:Karewa nijuudaino wakasade jibunno ie o tateta.
English: When he was in his twenties, he built his own house. (refers to building)

3) 私は彼女を家まで送って行った。
Romaji:Watashi wa kanojyo o iemade okutteitta. (refers to building)
English: I sent her to her house.

ie (いえ) refers to “family” A group consisting of a married couple and children

Example
1) 彼は貧しい家に生まれたが、努力して有名人になった。
Romaji:Kare wa mazushii ieni umaretaga, doryokushite yuumeijin ni natta.
English: Although he was born in a poor family, through his effort, he became a famous person. (refers to family)

2) 私の家は、代々学者です。
Romaji:Watashi no ie wa, daidai gakusha desu.
English: There have been scholars in my family for generation.

Japanese word uchi (うち) in English means “house” or “home”

uchi (うち) refers to a building which is the same as ie (いえ) built as a dwelling for people, however the people who live in the building are also included in the meaning

Example
1) 彼女は、赤い屋根の大きなうちに住んでいる。
Romaji:Kanojyo wa akai yane no ookina uchini sundeiru.
English: She lives in a big house with a red roof.

2) この辺のうちは、ほとんどが建て売りです。
Romaji:Kono henno uchi wa, hotondo ga tateuri desu.
English: Most of the houses in this area were ready-built.

3) 疲れたから、早くうちに帰りたい。
Romaji:Tsukaretakara, hayaku uchini kaeritai.
English: I am tired, so I would like to go home early.

uchi (うち) is also used to refer to one’s own house or family. It may also refer to a group of the speaker belongs to, for example a school or company. uchi (うち) has a broader meaning than ie (いえ), and is more frequently used.

Example
1) うちは4人家族です。
Romaji: Uchi wa yonin kazoku desu.
English: There are four people in my family.

2) あしたは一日中うちにいます。
Romaji: Ashita wa ichinichijyuu uchi ni imasu.
English: I will be home all day tomorrow.

3) これが、うちの会社の新製品です。
Romaji: Kore ga, uchino kaishano shinseihin desu.
English: This is my company’s latest products.
