The difference between dochira (どちら) and dore (どれ)

Dochira (どちら) is used when choosing, or having someone choose, one of two things (example 1,2,3). Dotchi(どっち)is a shortened colloquial form.

Example
1) うどんとそばと、どちらが好きですか?
Romaji:Udon to soba to, dochiraga sukidesuka?
English: Which would you prefer, udon or soba?

2) お茶かお花が習いたいんだけど、どっちがいいか迷っています。
Romaji:Ocha ka ohana ga naraitaindakedo, dotchiga iika mayotteimasu.
English: I want to study either tea ceremony or flower arrangement. I can’t make up my mind which would be better.

3) 博多へ行くのに、飛行機と新幹線とどっちが速いかなあ。
Romaji:Hakata e ikunoni, hikooki to shinkansen to dotchiga hayaikanaa?
English: To go to Hakata, which would be faster, a plane or the Shinkansen?

It also is a polite way of asking dore (どれ) (which) or doko (どこ) (where) when the selection is from among many items. Dochira sama (どちら様) which is a polite expression than dore (どれ) or donata (どなた), is used when asking someone for their name.(example 4,5,6,7)

Example
4) A: ご出身はどちらですか?
B: 北海道です。
Romaji:
A: Goshusshinwa dochiradesuka?
B: Hokkaidoodesu
English:
A: Where are you from?
B: Hokkaido

5) A: これからどちらへいらっしゃいますか?
B: まっすぐうちへ帰ります。
Romaji:
A: Korekara, dochira e irasshaimasuka?
B: Massugu uchi e kaerimasu.
English:
A: Where are you going now?
B: I am going straight home.

6) A: どちらが岡田さんですか?
B: はい、私です。
Romaji:
A: Dochiraga Okadasan desuka?
B: Hai. Watashi desu.
English:
A: Which one of you is Mr. Okada?
B: That’s me.

7) 失礼ですが、どちら様でしょうか?
Romaji: Shitsureidesuga, dochirasama deshooka?
English: Excuse me, may I have your name please?

Dore (どれ) is a word used when asking “which” when choosing from among three or more choices (example 8,9,10)

Example
8) あなたの荷物はどれですか?
Romaji: Anata no nimotsu wa dore desuka?
English: Which bags are yours?

9) ここにある本のなかで、どれが一番おもしろいですか?
Romaji: Koko ni aru hon no nakade, dorega ichiban omoshiroi desuka?
English: Which is the most interesting of the books that are here?

10) 飲み物はコーヒーと紅茶と日本茶がありますけど、どれにしますか?
Romaji: Nomimono wa, koohi to koocha to nihoncha ga arimasu keredo, dore ni shimasuka?
English: For drinks, we have coffee, tea or green tea. Which will you have?
