The difference between asoko (あそこ) and achira (あちら)

Japanese words asoko (あそこ) and achira (あちら) in English both refer to “over there”

Asoko (あそこ) designates visible location slightly removed, from both the speaker and the listener. Let’s see the examples below

Example
1) 地下鉄の入り口は、あそこです。
Romaji：Chikatetsu no iriguchi wa, asoko desu.
English: The subway entrance is over there.

2) あそこの席があいていますよ。
Romaji：Asoko no seki ga aiteimasuyo.
English: That seat is open.

3) あそこにいるのが、私の妹です。
Romaji：Asoko niiru no ga, watashi no imooto desu.
English: The person over there is my younger sister.

Asoko (あそこ) is also used to refer to a place which has been previously mentioned in conversation. If only the speaker has knowledge of the place, soko is used.

Example
1) 駅前の喫茶店を知っていますか？あそこで4時に会いましょう。
Romaji：Ekimae no kissaten o shittei masuka? Asoko de yoji ni aimashoo.
English: Do you know the coffee shop in front of the station? Let’s meet there at four o’clock.

2) 来月から北海道ですね、あそこは寒いから、気をつけてください。
Romaji：Raigetsu kara Hokkaidoo desune, asoko wa samui kara, kio tsukete kudasai.
English: You’ll be in Hokkaido starting next month, right? It’s cold there so please be careful.

Achira (あちら) is more polite way of saying asoko, however it also may refer to a direction or place somewhat more distant

Example
1) ここが会議室です。先生のお席はあちらです。
Romaji：Koko ga kaigishitsu desu. Sensei no oseki wa achira desu.
English: This is the conference room. Your seat is over there, professor.

2) あちらに居る方が、この会社の社長さんです。
Romaji：Achira ni iru kataga, kono kaisha no shachoosan desu.
English: The gentleman over there is the president of our company.

3) 今から九州へ行きます。あちらに着いたら電話をします。
Romaji：Imakara kyuushuu e ikimasu. Achirani tsuitara denwa o shimasu.
English: I’m going to Kyushu now. I’ll call when I get there.

Achira (あちら) is also a polite way of saying ano hito (that person)

Example
1) こちらは石川さんです。あちらは林さんです。
Romaji: Kochira wa Ishikawasan desu. Achira wa Hayashisan desu.
English: This is Mr. Ishikawa. That is Ms. Hayashi over there.

2) あちらはどなたですか？
Romaji: Achira wa donata desuka?
English: Who is that person over there?
