「寒い・涼しい・冷たい」は気温など温度を表すことばです。時々・気温を天気の一部だと考えて、「天気が寒い・天気が涼しい・天気が冷たい」などと使う外国人がいます。でもそれは間違いです。天気は「晴れ・雨・くもり」などの状態で、「天気がいい」のように「いい・悪い」で表します。けれども気温について言うときは、「きょうは寒いですね」「南極は一年中寒い」「涼しくて気持ちがいい」「風が冷たい」のように、具体的なものを指して表します。

コーヒーは２杯か２つか
ものを数えるときに使う単位の、助数詞には「（えんぴつ）１本・（車）２台・（本）３冊・・・」などたくさんあります。コーヒーはどうでしょうか？「１杯・２杯・・・」と数えます。スパゲッティは…？「１本・２本・・・」とも数えますし、料理として出てくれば「１皿・２皿・・・」と言います。それなのに…レストランでAさんがBさんの分も含めて「コーヒー２杯」と言ったらウエイトレスは、Aさんの前に２杯置くかもしれません。
２人分のつもりならふつうは「コーヒー２つ」と言います。レストランや喫茶店などで注文するときは、助数詞にこだわらずに「（１つ、２つ、のように）∼つ」を使うのです。ただ、もしもAさんが本当にコーヒーを一度に２杯飲みたければ「コーヒー２杯」と注文していいのです。
