The difference between umai and oishii

The difference between umai and oishiiumai means that a food is tasty, and is used predominately in male speech(ex1,2). It may also mean that one is skillful or good at doing something(ex3,4). Umai may also describe something as convenient or profitable(ex5).

うまいは以下の3つ意味があります
ー味がいいという意味で、多くは男性が使います。例1と2
ー上手だという意味で使います。例3と4
ー自分にとってつごうがよいとか利益があるという意味があります。例5

Let’s see some examples below
Example 1
A: このラーメン、うまいね。
Romaji: Kono raamen, umaine.
Eng: This ramen is delicious, isn’t it?
B: うん、うまい。
Romaji: Un, umai.
Eng: Yeah, good!

Example 2
この喫茶店のコーヒーはすごくうまいよ。
Romaji: Kono kissatenno
Eng: The coffee at this shop is extremely good, you know.

Example 3
田中先生は日本語の教え方がうまい。
Romaji: Tanakasenseiwa Nihongono oshiekataga umai.
Eng: Tanaka is very good at teaching Japanese.

Example 4
A:次は高橋君のサーブだよ
Romaji: Tsugiwa Takahashikun no saabudayo.
Eng: It is Takahashi’s turn to serve next.
B:うまい。さすがは高橋君だ。
Romaji: Umai. Sasugawa Takahashikunda.
Eng: Great serve! That is Takahashi!

Example 5
１万円が10日で100万円になるなんて、そんなうまい話があるわけがない。
Romaji: Ichiman enga tookade hyakuman enni narunante, sonna umai hanashiga aru wakega nai.
Eng: How can you make Yen 1,000,000 out of Yen 10,000 in ten days? That’s too good to be true.

Oishii means that a food is tasty and delicious(ex 6,7,8). Oishii can not be used in such cases as those in example 3 and 4 to refer to skillfulness.

味がいいという意味です（例６，７，８）「うまい」の例３，４のように「教え方がおいしい」とか「絵がおいしい」など、「上手だ」の意味には使えません。

Example 6
A: このケーキおいしいわね。
Romaji: Kono keeki oishiiwane
Eng: This cake is very tasty!
B: そうね、おいしいわね。
Romaji: Soone, oishiiwane.
Eng: Yes, it is, isn’t it?

Example 7
この地方の水はおいしい。
Romaji: Kono chihoono mizuwa oishii.
Eng: The water in this area is delicious.

Example 8
山の頂上で、おいしい空気を胸いっぱい吸いました。
Romaji: Yamano choojoode, oishii kuukio muneippai suimashita.
Eng: We breathed fresh clean air on the mountain top.
