Hello, my name is ISHIGURO. I have a rather uncommon background, where I was born in Tokyo, barely lived there for a year, moved to Washington D.C. to live there for 3 years, then moved again to the Philippines spending 7 years there, finally arriving to Singapore living here until now.

My first experience with teaching Japanese started when I was offered to teach a daughter of my parents friend, and surprisingly, as an indolent middle scholar I was, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy teaching as I though it would be. Though I’ve only been teaching Japanese for 1 year, I’m confident with my ability to tutor because I’m fluent in both Japanese and English, spending my entire life using Japanese with my parents, and spending an equal amount of time learning English since I’ve only been attending in an international school. I have also been learning Chinese for 6 years.

My method of teaching and the content of my lesson will be completely dependent on you, the student. I have the ability to teach speaking, listening, writing, reading in Japanese, and I’ll prioritize any of these skills depending on your request. If you wish, I can even teach you English instead of Japanese. Please don’t hesitate, I’ll always put in all my effort for your success！

I’ll be available during the evenings of Tuesday and Wednesday, and any time on Saturday and Sunday. I will also come anywhere if it’s decently close to any MRT station.

I’ve always considered teaching as a method to communicate, a method to interact, and as a current student as myself, without an exception, I feel I have some kind of bond with all my teachers. I hope I can do the same with you, to not only improve your Japanese language skills but to understand you as a person.　If you have interest in learning Japanese, learning Japanese culture, I guarantee I can guide you to your goal. 皆さん、こんにちは。ISHIGUROと申します。自分は比較的特殊な経歴を持っており、日本に滞在していたのは生まれた一年のみで、すぐにワシントンD.C.に引っ越し、三年後親の転勤でフィリピンに七年間過ごし、最終的にシンガポールに移動し、現在に至るわけです。

初めての家庭教師としての経験は親の友人から自分の娘に日本語を教えてくれと依頼され、当時は無気力な中学生だったのに、意外に家庭教師としての仕事を気に入っておりました。家庭教師としての経験は一年間だけしかありませんが、英語と日本語の語学能力に関しては絶対的な自信があります。生まれてからずっと家族との会話は日本語だけでしか行っておらず、また、インターナショナル校にしか通ったことがないことも相まって、日本語と同じくらい英語を勉強してきました。また中国語も六年間学びました。

私の授業は基本的に生徒の要望に沿って臨機応変に対応していくつもりです。日本語で話したい、読みたい、書きたい、聞きたい、どれを教えるかは生徒たちの希望によって優先するつもりです。知りたいことがあればなんでも教えます！英語も望むなら教えられます。躊躇せず自分の求める技術を教えてください、何であろうと全力で取り組みます！

火曜日、水曜日の夕方から夜と週末での全ての時間帯に活動可能で、公共交通機関を使用して行ける範囲ならどこでもOKです。

Private Japanese Lessons and Personalized Programs

Firstly, I want you to understand that my lessons/programs will completely be dependent on the students. What I mean by this is that I’ll teach what the students want to get taught, and my programs will only be consisted of topics what they desire. In other words, I’ll be completely obedient to my students and their interest.

Japanese Teaching Qualifications and Experience

My Japanese Teaching experience started last year when I was offered from a friend of my parents to teach their kids Japanese. Since then, I’ve been teaching them for over a year now. I believe I qualify as a Japanese tutor as I’m confident to say that I’m fluent in both Japanese and English. I’m born in Japan, and I’ve only have spoken Japanese to my parents in the past 18 years. I also have absolutely no problem in writing, listening, and reading as well. Similarly, I’ve only attended international schools, an environment where you are forced to speak only English. I have spent equal amounts of time on English as Japanese, and I have also been learning Chinese for 6 years since I came to Singapore.

Japanese Teaching Approach

I plan to approach teaching Japanese by mainly focusing on reading and listening, skills that require to understand Japanese, not skills to express your thoughts/ideas in Japanese. I assume most students who want to learn Japanese are those who are interested in the Japanese culture, those who want to have a deeper understanding of our culture and language. Obviously speaking Japanese and writing Japanese is a skill that is equally useful as listening and reading, however if my students’s purpose is to experience Japanese culture, these are the main skills that are required to meet their goal.

But this is my stance only when my students don’t have any interest in what to get taught or don’t have a preferred method in their lesson. My number one purpose is to serve those who want my assistance, and I’ll change my lesson as much as my students want them to be changed. If they prefer to learn to speak, I’ll teach them to speak, if they want to learn to write in Japanese, I’ll definitely teach them how to write.

Please understand I’m flexible in my teaching method and what I’ll teach, all I want to do is satisfy my students.

ISHIGURO先生へ「～に関して」と「～について」の違いについて教えていただけないでしょうか?

ISHIGURO先生’s Answer:

（に関して）と（について）の間には違いといえるほどの分別方法があるわけではなく、また日常会話でも意識的にこの二つの単語を使い分ける必要もありませんが、強いていうなら（に関して）の方が（について）より硬い言葉です。会議やプレゼンテーションでの場合、（に関して）の方がよい響きを持ちます。心理学についての本より心理学に関する本の方が専門的に聞こえます。しかし少なくとも日常会話では（に関して）も（について）もお互いの代用として使用できます。

ISHIGURO先生へ「せっかく」と「わざわざ」の違いについて教えていただけないでしょうか?

ISHIGURO先生’s Answer:

（せっかく）は自身のいる状況、自身のいる立場を無駄にせず、活かせようとする時に使えます。例文：『せっかく海に来たんだから、泳ごう。』海という幸福な状況にいるので、この時間と特権を無駄にしないために泳ごうという意味での（せっかく）。
（わざわざ）はしなくてもいいのに損をしてまでその行為に及ぶ意味として使われます。『わざわざ私のために子供を寝かしといてくれてありがとうございます。』子供を自分が寝かす必要はないのに、率先して自分の時間と体力を犠牲にしてまでも寝かしてくれた（仮に本人は損をしたと思っていなくても、この発言をした人の視点では彼が損をしたと考えている）という意味での（わざわざ）。

ISHIGURO先生へ「きみ」と「あなた」と「あんた」の違いについて説明してくれませんか?

ISHIGURO先生’s Answer:
きみ、あなた、あんたは全て誰かを呼ぶ時に使われる言葉です。しかし意味が同じでも、状況によって使い分けなくてはなりません。きみは目上の人が自分より立場が下の人に対して使う丁寧な言葉です。同じ立場の人たちの間でも使用できますが、下の立場の人間が上に対して使うことは基本的にありません。

あなたを使う人はその言葉を使う人に対して少なからず尊敬している意味も含めているので、どの立場の人が誰に対してでも使える言葉です。
あなたとは反対に、あんたは尊敬していない相手に使う言葉です。少なくとも初対面で使うべきではありません。

自分は人生の大半を南国で過ごしたため、それぞれの季節に対しての日本人の繊細な感情を羨ましく思っております。日本文化は春、夏、秋、冬の季節を全て慈しみ、そして大切にしています。自然という環境に対して生活を調整する上、季節ごとの行事や衣替え、変わりゆく環境に日本は見事適応しています。もちろん他にも四季が存在する国はありますが、四季の美しさに対して感動せざるを得ないその感性は日本独自のものです。しかし残念ながら現代社会では自然が昔と比べ味気ないものになってしまいましたが、それでもやはり昔と変わらず、春を期待してしまい、冬には少し寂しく感じてしまう日本人の性分は尊く、重宝すべき立派な日本文化です。
