Hello, everyone ! My name is Yoko. I grew up in Osaka and Kyoto and after graduation from a university in the U.S., I lived in various countries such as France, Thailand and Australia. This year, I moved to Singapore and since then, everyday is a new discovery.

Learning new languages and cultures has always been my passion since I was a student. I love communicating with other people. These are the reasons why I decided to become a Japanese tutor.

シンガポールの皆さん、こんにちは！関西出身のYokoです。大学までは大阪と京都で過ごし、その後東京、アメリカ、フランス、タイ、オーストラリアなどを転々としてきました。今年からシンガポールに住んでいます。

言語を学ぶのが大好きで、今まで英語・スペイン語・フランス語・中国語などを勉強しました。私にとって言葉を学ぶ楽しさは、外国人とコミュニケーションが取れるようになること、新しい文化に触れられることです。人と関われる仕事、日本人の自分が海外で出来る仕事は何かなと探していたところ、日本語教師に出会いました。

YOKO先生へ「～だが」と「～けれど(も)」と「～が」と「～しかし」の違いについて教えていただけないでしょうか?

YOKO先生’s Answer:
明らかな違いはないが、「だが」は書き言葉に、「けれど(も)」は話言葉として使われる事が多い。

「だが」は書き言葉に、「しかし」は話言葉として使われることが多い。「だが」は基本的に「しかし」に置き換えることが出来るが、「しかし」には「だが」に置き換えることができない使い方がある。「しかし本当に暑いねえ」のように感情を込めて文頭に用いる場合で、「それにしても」という言葉に置き換えられる。

YOKO先生へ「～どうでしょうか」と「～どうですか」の違いについて教えていただけないでしょうか?

YOKO先生’s Answer:
ニュアンスの違い。「～どうでしょうか」の方が丁寧な言い回し。

YOKO先生へ 「忙しかったです」と「忙しかったでした」の違いについて説明してくれませんか?

YOKO先生’s Answer:
敬語の過去形では「忙しかったです」としか言えません。「忙しかったでした」は間違いです。

Japanese Culture of Hospitality
When asked what Japanese culture is, the first thing that comes to my mind is the unique Japanese culture of hospitality. First of all, the impression of customer service in Japan is unforgettable. Many foreigners have the impression that the staff of the shop in Japan is very kind.

It is said that Japanese transport network service is world’s top 1 level. Train service is running frequently, the arrival time and departure time are very accurate. Finally, the convenience store is a great place to experience more Japanese hospitality. We have all kinds of daily necessities, there is a copy machine and ATM, you can pay utility bills, and you can do everything at a convenience store. I’m also happy with the delicate service, such as dividing the bag into warm and cold ones. Such convenience is only due to the spirit of hospitality.

日本文化とはと聞かれてまず頭に浮かぶのは日本独特の「おもてなしの文化」です。まず目につくのが接客の良さです。店員さんが親切という印象を抱く外国人は多いようです。お客様に気持ちよく過ごして欲しいというサービス精神が伝わってきます。

日本の交通機関も世界トップのサービスと言えるでしょう。電車の本数も多く時間も非常に正確です。最後に、日本のおもてなし精神の塊りともいえるのがコンビニエンスストアです。あらゆる日用品が揃い、コピー機やATMもあり、公共料金も払え、全ての用事がコンビニで済みます。温かい物と冷たい物で袋を分けてくれたりなど繊細なサービスも嬉しいです。こういった便利さも、おもてなし精神があってこそなのです。
