Hi, I am Kumi of “Hong Kong Japanese Tutor”. I’m from Tokyo and have lived in Hong Kong for 10 years. I used to be a school teacher and now I’m running a private Japanese academy. I love Hong Kong!

I have 20 years of teaching experience. I was an assistant teacher at a national graduate school, an elementary school music teacher, a special school teacher, a Tokyo metropolitan high school teacher, a private piano teacher, a playgroup teacher, an international elementary school Japanese class teacher, and now I am running a private academy.

In my lesson, firstly I will make a individual tutoring plan according to your goals, and I will listen to the feedback from you, and then decide the learning content for the next lesson based on it. It’s going to be a fulfilling and fun lesson every time!

For beginners I often use pictures, photos, and gestures. I will make it fun to memorise the regularity of inflection by singing it, or by using a visual method, for example with some picture cards.

Also, I speak slowly and clearly if I need to, no matter how many times you ask the same question, I will change the word and explain to you carefully until you completely understand it.

For intermediate level and above, I will decide which textbook to use according to your goal. You also can study with the topics of your interest and needs. Let’s read, write, and speak Japanese you have just learned immediately. You will be a smart consumer in DON DON DONKI!

For advanced level, I can teach business Japanese. I have experience in advising people who work in customer service on business etiquette, polite and humble words to use. When I was a high school teacher, I also taught high school students how to prepare for interviews (admission exams, resume preparation, etc.).

I will do my best to provide you with my experience and expertise that I have cultivated for 20 years as a teacher. I can teach people in all generations between the toddlers and the elderly people. I will help you realise your dreams after learning Japanese.

初めまして、“Hong Kong Japanese Tutor”のKumi(久美)です。出身は東京都で、香港在住10年です。香港が大好きな、元学校教師で、現在日本語個人塾を経営しています。

私は教職経験が20年あります。まず、国立大学院のティーチング•アシスタントから始まり、小学校の非常勤講師、そして東京都立特別支援学校と東京都立高校で常勤で働いた後、香港に移住して、個人ピアノ教師、日本語プレイグループ教員、インターナショナル小学校日本語クラス運営をして、現在は日本語の個人塾を経営しています。

私のレッスンは、まず目標に応じた個別指導計画を立てて、授業後に生徒さんのフィードバックを伺い、それをもとに次回の学習内容を決めていきます。毎回充実した、楽しいレッスンですよ！

初級者の方には、絵や写真、ジェスチャーをよく使います。語形変化の規則性を歌にして覚えたり、絵カードなどを使って視覚的に伝えることで、楽しんで覚えることができます。必要に応じて文章をゆっくりと、またはっきりと話し、何度同じ質問をされても、言い方を変えて、わかるまで丁寧に説明します。

中級レベル以上の方には、目標に応じてテキストを決めます。ご興味のある話題でレッスンを進めたり、覚えた日本語をすぐに読み書き、話して使います。ドンキホーテで、賢い消費者になれるかもしれません！

上級者には、ビジネス日本語にも対応します。カスタマーサービスに勤める方に、敬語、ビジネスマナー、接客用語などをアドバイスした経験があります。高校教師在職時には、面接対策(入学試験、履歴書対策など)も高校生に指導していました。

Ask KUMI Teacher Japanese Learning Questions

KUMI先生へ「だけ」と「しか」の違いについて教えていただけないでしょうか?

KUMI先生’s Answer:
両方ともonlyという意味ですが、「しか」は「～ない」と一緒に使うという決まりがあります。

例えば、
１）Kumiさんは英語だけ話せる。
２）Kumiさんは英語しか話せない。

上記の例文で２）は、Kumiさんは本当は他の言語も話せるようになりたいけれど、英語しか話せないという残念な気持ち、不満に思っている気持ちが伝わってきますよね。
「しか」を使った文では「残念」、「不十分」といった否定的なニュアンスが含まれることが多いです。

KUMI先生へ「水を飲みたい」と「水が飲みたい」の違いについて教えていただけないでしょうか?

KUMI先生’s Answer:
どちらも正しい使い方です。
「水が飲みたい」では「水」が文の主体です。「飲みたい」より「水」が強調されます。

「水を飲みたい」では、飲むという動作の対象が水に当たります。この場合は「飲みたい」と「水」 が同じ程度、あるいは「飲みたい」が少し強調されることになるのです。

KUMI先生へ 「～が～てある」と「～を～てある」の違いについて説明してくれませんか?

KUMI先生’s Answer:
4つの例文を比べて考えてみましょう。

まず「目の前の状態（結果の状態）」を表す時には「が」を使います。
１）エアコンがつけてある。
２）電気が消してある。
３）窓が開けてある。
４）鍵がかけてある。

「準備ができた状況」を表す時には「を」が多く使われます。
１）エアコンをつけてあるので、涼しいです。
２）電気を消してあるので、真っ暗です。
３）窓を開けてあるので、空気が入れ替わっています。
４）鍵をかけてあるので、安心です。

　In Japan, trains arrive and depart exactly on time. There is no delay, not even by one minute. The same is true of Japanese people, they arrive on time and business and social meetings start and finish on time.

　It happens because of our consideration for others and our desire to coexist responsibly and respectfully. We do not wish to inconvenience others, but instead strive to build strong relationships based on trust. Trust is very important in Japan.

　The same applies to products made in Japan. Japanese manufacturers care about consumers’ feelings, they want their products to be usable, durable, practical, well made and loved. A Japanese manufacturer will always try its best for its customers. The same is true for service generally in Japan, it is full of compassion for the customer.

　Life in Japan is full of good hospitality and heartfelt service. This spirit of hospitality is something that Japanese people can be proud of, and I think can be used in various situations in business.
